Рассматривается роль известного американского ученого Юджина Гарфилда в создании одной из крупнейших в мире современных систем индексации и цитирования научных публикаций Web of Science. Отмечается важность учета не только количественных, но и качественных параметров в оценке развития науки, на которые указывал Гарфилд. Приводится историческая справка о создании системы Web of Science. Дается общая характеристика современного состояния системы. Подчеркнута значимость системы Web of Science как одного из возможных инструментов для наукометрического анализа.

The article examines the role of a famous American scientist Eugene Garfield in creating Web of Science, one of the world largest modern systems for indexing and citing scientific publications. The author notes the importance of considering not only quantitative but qualitative parameters to evaluate the science development, which have been indicated by Garfield. The paper contains historical information about the Web of Science system creation; characterizes general features of the modern state system. It shows the system importance as a possible tool of scientometric analysis.
