In the scientific circulation the text is introduced, that earlier has not attracted researchers' attention - the XVI century treatment of the episode from the Epistles of the Earth paradise by Novgorod Archbishop Vassilij Calica on Novgorod people, who found the paradise on the Earth. The author makes an attempt, basing on indirect evidence to date the creation of the text presented. The text of the legend about Novgorod sailors is given in the Appendix.

The article is devoted to the problems of history of St-Petersburg merchants' memoirs and diaries
(the late XVIII - early XX century) studying in modern Russian historiography The basic research on the history of entrepreneurship and merchants of Russia, released after 1991, and reflection in them the memoirs of Petersburg merchants as a source are considered. The way of using certain memoirs and diaries is analyzed, general conclusions on trends in their studying by modern scholars are made.

The history of home library of the mining officer N. S. Plokhova as a source for studying book culture of Kolyvano-Voskresensk mining district in the second half of XVIIIth century is considered. Data of biographic character, school affairs, everyday life, influenced on the formation of the book collection owner are given. Virtual reconstruction of the book catalogue is carried out.
