Abstract
The second half of XIX - early XX centuries is a period of the most dynamic development of military libraries in Russia. This time is characterized by a variety of libraries of different types and forms with their inherent properties and distinctive features. Hence, different views and approaches to the problem of terminology, typology and classification of libraries appeared in papers of Russian librarianship researchers. There are no universal schemes in the historical-library studies. The proposed classification of military libraries is based on multiyear experience of studying the history of the military librarianship. It was collected and analyzed about 300 systematic (mainly) and alphabetical book catalogs (and amendments thereto) in military libraries, published in 1862-1916, as well as more than 70 book catalogs of libraries in military schools (1830-1916). Studied sources give an opportunity to structure the different types and forms of military libraries not only in a chronological order, but according to type-forming functions: military research, military educational, army officers, special, soldiers, as well as book collections of famous military leaders. To characterize some groups of the military libraries more complete their different hierarchical scheme are used.

Abstract
The problem of book typology being of decisive importance to identify the essential properties of a book as an object of communication is examined. The paper analyzes existing in bibliology concepts of book typology, their advantages and disadvantages, and determines the future research directions of book typological characteristics. Bibliological papers identify the important role of the typology in studying the essential book characteristics, formulate conditions of effective typologization and principles forming the typological book structure basis, designate methodological approaches to the criterion based on which the book typologization is possible. There are logical and methodological shortcomings in typological constructions made on the base of these regulations, which could be eliminated by studying the book in frames of the whole documentative system, i. e. as a document type. This approach will make it possible to determine the essential features of the book distinguishing it from other types of documents, accounting the modern conditions of communication.

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH WORK

Abstract
The paper is devoted to the development of «scientific thought» as a concept and a methodological category in the history of library science. The processes of generation and formation of scientific thought in the domestic librarianship and library science at the initial stage, i.e. since its inception to institutionalization as a scientific discipline, are examined. The duality of scientific thought in library science is marked: its differentiation into the library thought - a form of judgment in librarianship based on a generalization of everyday experience and knowledge, and the thought of library science based on scientific methods. It is suggested to associate the origin of the library thought with the emergence of libraries as institutional establishments in XVI-XVII centuries, rather than individual book collections, thereby separating it from the thought manifestation in bibliology. There are two stages in the development of librarianship thought: an auxiliary one, when it was formed in frames of other scientific disciplines, ensuring their development, in particular pedagogy, and an autonomous or independent one, associated with the comprehension of the library as a self-sufficient social institution. The origin of library thought is associated with the activities of V. I. Sobolshchikov, a domestic scientist who first used a comparative method in studying librarianship. It is suggested to consider some N. F. Fedorov’s ideas as manifestation of theoretical scientific thought in the national library science.
