The journal was established by the State Public Scientific and Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) and approved by the Presidium of SB RAS on 23.09.2004. Its first editor-in-chief was the doctor of technical sciences, prof. B. S. Elepov. In the first year (2005) the journal published 2 issues, in all subsequent – 4 issues per year.
In 2010, the journal "Bibliosphere" was included in the List of the Higher attestation commission (HAC) of the Ministry of education and science of Russia for the publication of the main scientific results of dissertations for the degree of candidate and doctor of science. In September 2015, it entered the new List of leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and issues recommended by the HAC in the group of scientific specialties 05.25.03 and 07.00.00, that was actual since 01.12.2015.
In accordance with the decision of the HAC dated October 25, 2017 № 2-PL/2 from January 1, 2018, the journal "Bibliosphere" is included in the List of HAC only for the specialty 07.00.00 – historical Sciences and archeology. By the order of the Ministry of education and science of March 26, 2019 the journal was excluded from the List of HAC in the group of scientific specialties 07.00.00.
Nevertheless, the Bibliosphere became the first and remains the only specialized scientific journal behind the Urals on the problems of library science, bibliography and book science. It reflects the results of scientific activities of scientific schools formed here; it is the place where young authors are published, as well as reviews on the most relevant areas of theory and practice of domestic and foreign libraries.
Close connection of the Journal with the leading and associate professors of the institutes of culture, and first of all – that of St. Petersburg, allowed to keep the Journal section "Methodology of research", so that the journal has become a leading scientific periodical in Russia, which regularly publishes articles on new methods of research, discusses the problems of methodological base of dissertations.
Bibliosphere became a journal in which authors (graduate students, doctoral students, famous scientists) from many regions of Russia: Moscow, St.-Petersburg, Kazan, Belgorod, Yekaterinburg, N-Novgorod, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Tomsk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, Vladivostok, Khabarovsk etc. publish their research results, as well as colleagues from foreign countries.
In Siberia and the Far East there are 7 higher institutions that train specialists for a modern library, they affiliate a large number of professors and associate professors, young scientists are growing up. From the very beginning of its publication the journal has its own page on the website of the founder. Since 2019 it has its own site.
Since 2016, DOI is assigned to all articles in the Journal. In the same year, it became possible to submit an article to the Journal via its website.
Since 2017, the journal began posting materials to published articles on the website, which contain detailed initial research data that are not included in the main text of the article.
In mid-2019, it was decided to change the structure of the Journal management. Now it has the Editorial Board, consisting of 11 foreign scientists, 15 Russian specialists and 9 leading members of the SPSTL SB RAS.
